Paint protection film, ceramic coating and tint in Rumson, NJ

Protection for Rumson cars

Rumson sits between the Navesink and the Shrewsbury, and our Ocean Township shop is about 20 minutes away outside rush hour. Rumson garages hold more than their share of cars that deserve care: sports cars, classics, new SUVs and the cars that only come out on weekends. Buff & Beyond protects them with paint protection film, ceramic coating and window tint, all done in house by our full-time staff.

Paint protection film

Rumson Road and the bridge to Sea Bright put cars a few minutes from the ocean. Salt air settles on paint, and summer beach traffic kicks up sand and gravel from the shoulders. LLumar self-healing film takes that wear before the clear coat does, and gloss film is optically clear from normal viewing distance.

Film is sold by coverage. Basic Front covers the front bumper, full hood, mirrors, headlights and fog lights, and is usually done within a day. Full Front adds the full front fenders, so no film edge cuts across them, and takes one to two days. Full Front Plus adds the A-pillars, the roof edge over the windshield and the rocker panels, also one to two days. Full Body covers every painted panel over two to three days.

For a collector car, a car with paint that is hard to match, or anything you plan to keep for years, Full Body is the safest choice, because every painted panel is covered and no single panel stands out later. For a daily driver, Full Front Plus covers the panels that take almost every hit. Older and resprayed paint gets inspected before we recommend film, and the film carries a manufacturer backed warranty.

Ceramic coating

Cars in Rumson live with river and ocean air. Salt settles on the paint, morning dew dries into spots, and gulls do what gulls do. A coating gives all of that a slick surface to sit on instead of the clear coat, so it rinses away before it can do damage. A tow vehicle backed down a ramp takes salt water spray on the rear bumper and lower panels, and a coating makes that easy to rinse off at home. Corrected and coated paint also has a depth that shows in the driveway or at a cars and coffee.

A coating seals in whatever is under it, so every coating starts with a wash, decontamination and an inspection under strong light. Swirls and light scratches are polished out before the Gyeon coating goes on in a climate-controlled bay. That is why we sell paint correction together with a Level 1 or Level 2 coating, and why we show you what the paint needs before we start.

Window tint

A car parked at the beach or a club lot through a July afternoon gets very hot inside, and glare off the water is real on Rumson Road and over the bridges. Ceramic tint takes the edge off both, and it slows fading on leather, wood and dashboard trim. Convertibles and classics often have small or curved side glass, and a light shade keeps the original look while still cutting heat.

We install LLumar ceramic film in 70, 50, 35, 20 and 5 percent shades. The number is how much light gets through, so 70 is nearly clear and 5 is very dark. Ceramic film has no metal in it, so phones, navigation and key fobs work normally, and it stays clear from the inside at night.

Doing it together

Many owners do all three at once: film on the panels that take chips, a Gyeon coating over the whole car including the film, and tint on the glass. Together that is The Beyond Package, and it means one visit and one drop off instead of three.

Questions from Rumson drivers

Is a coating or film safe on a classic car?

Usually, yes, after an inspection. We check the paint first, and if it is thin or has been resprayed we tell you what we recommend.

Can a light tint keep the original look?

Yes. A ceramic 70 is close to clear and still takes heat off the glass.

Tell us what you drive on the estimate form and we will recommend a starting point.
